Dal Mash

Dal Mash is a spiced Indian lentil dish made from split black gram lentils cooked with sautéed onions, garlic paste, ginger, tomatoes, and aromatic spices including chili powder, turmeric, and cumin. The resulting dal is hearty and earthy, traditionally served with chapatis.

Description

Dal Mash utilizes soaked black gram lentils cooked along with lightly browned onions, garlic paste, and chopped tomatoes. The mix of chili powder, turmeric, salt, and cumin powder adds warm, earthy flavors and some heat. The cooking water ensures the lentils soften and the spices release their color and aroma.

The lentils yield a soft, thick consistency with a balanced blend of spices. The method includes simmering the lentils covered to tenderize evenly. Fresh chopped coriander at the end adds a herbal note.

This dal pairs well with homemade chapatis or other Indian breads, making a filling vegetarian meal with comforting textures and spiced depth. It can be served immediately while warm.
