Dried Orange Slices

Dried Orange Slices are thin orange rounds dehydrated until dry, useful for garnishing drinks, decorating baked goods, or adding a citrus aroma to various dishes. The drying process concentrates the orange's flavor and preserves the fruit for long-lasting use.

Description

This recipe calls for slicing oranges into 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick pieces, omitting the end slices that consist only of peel and removing any seeds to avoid bitterness. The slices are dried either in a low oven set to 200°F or in a food dehydrator set to 135°F.

Oven drying involves placing slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment or a metal rack to allow airflow and flipping every hour, taking several hours depending on slice thickness and oven seal. Using a drying rack cuts the drying time roughly in half. The dehydrator method requires flipping slices every hour as well and takes 6 to 9 hours, varying with tray type.

Dried orange slices are versatile and decorative, offering concentrated citrus notes without moisture, making them handy for use over time.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 orange or more or less if you prefer

Instructions

  1. Slice oranges 1/8-1/4 inch thick. Discard (compost) the end slices that are all peel.
  2. Remove any seeds.
  3. To oven dry, place slices into a 200 F oven on a baking sheet topped with an oven safe metal rack or parchment. Flip slices over every hour until dry. Time will vary based on thickness, tightness of the oven seal, and will be less if you have a rack (since they can dry from both sides at the same time). Mine took 4-6 hours on parchment. On a rack, it should be about half that.
  4. To dry using a dehydrator, set the temperature to 135F. Set the slices on a mesh drying sheet. If you are worried about dripping, pat them dry first or set up an additional, unused tray with a solid drying sheet below. Start the dehydrator and flip the slices every hour or so. Mine have taken from 6-9 hours on a mesh tray but double the one time I used a solid tray.
