Easy Chai Latte
Description
The recipe begins by heating milk and steeping black tea bags to infuse the drink with tea flavor and creaminess. Ground cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and cardamom are whisked in along with vanilla extract and maple syrup, heating the mixture until hot to meld the flavors. The ground spices contribute to the chai's characteristic warm aromatics and subtle heat.
The finished chai latte has a smooth, velvety texture from the milk, punctuated by the deep flavor of black tea and a complex spice profile. The sweetness from maple syrup balances the spices without overwhelming them. If preferred, the chai can be strained to remove any sediment from the ground spices for a cleaner cup.
Serving the latte warm and optionally topped with milk foam and a sprinkle of cinnamon adds a comforting touch, making it suitable for quiet mornings or cozy afternoons.
Ingredients
- 3 cups milk dairy or dairy-free
- 2 black tea bags
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ teaspoon cloves ground
- ⅛ teaspoon ground cardamom
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
Instructions
- Heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once it begins to simmer, turn off the heat and add the tea bags (I snip any labels off the tea bags so they can fully immerse). Let the tea steep for 4 to 5 minutes, then remove the tea bags with a slotted spoon.
- Turn the heat back up to medium heat, and add the cinnamon, ginger, cloves, cardamom, vanilla, and maple syrup. Whisk everything together, until the chai tea is hot.
- Pour the tea into mugs and if you'd like, top with extra milk foam and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Notes
- If you lack ground cloves or cardamom, substitute with allspice as an alternative spice.
- Various black teas can be used, including Darjeeling or English Breakfast, either caffeinated or decaffeinated.
- Because ground spices settle, strain the latte through a fine mesh sieve before serving if you prefer less sediment.
