Ingredients
- 1 (8 to 10 pound) bone-in ham
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup pineapple juice
- 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
- 3/4 cup brown sugar divided
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
- To prepare the ham, place it in a roasting pan, leaving the fatty side up. Be sure to remove all plastic packaging on the ham. Use a knife to lightly cut criss cross patterns, about1- 1 ½ inches, in the ham.
- Pour the water and pineapple juice into the bottom of the roasting pan, then cover the pan with foil. Place the covered ham in the oven, on the lowest rack, and cook for about 75 to 90 minutes, basting as needed. (A 10 pound ham takes about 90 minutes.)
- While the ham is cooking, prepare the glaze. Set the syrup and 1/4 cup brown sugar aside. Combine the remaining brown sugar and all other ingredients in a small bowl, stirring to completely mix them together.
- Once the ham has been cooking for 90 minutes, remove it from the oven, leaving the oven on. Using a pastry brush, coat the entire ham with the syrup. Pour the brown sugar mixture over the syrup, patting it all over the ham. Use the reserved brown sugar to top the ham, covering any missed sections. (You may not use the entire ¼ cup of brown sugar.)
- Place the ham back in the oven, uncovered, for an an additional 30 to 35 minutes. Return the foil if the ham begins to burn from the glaze.
- Baste the ham well with juices just before serving. Enjoy!
Notes
- TEMPERATURE: The ham should be cooked to an internal temperature of 135 to 140 degrees on a meat thermometer.
- SUBSTITUTIONS
- Ham: Use a 8 to 10 pound bone-in ham for this recipe. You can use a boneless ham, but you will need to adjust the cooking time as boneless hams don't require as much time to cook.
- Pineapple Juice: This adds flavor. You can substitute with water, if desired.
- Brown Sugar: You can reduce the amount of brown sugar, if desired.
- Spices: You can omit the spices, if desired, but it's not recommended as the spices help enhance the flavor.
