Elderberry Syrup Recipe

Elderberry Syrup Recipe uses dried black elderberries simmered with warming spices like cinnamon, ginger, and cloves, then sweetened with honey. The process reduces the mixture into a thick syrup with berry-infused flavor and spice notes. This syrup is commonly taken as a daily tonic or when feeling under the weather, with simple serving doses for adults and children. The method also allows alternative slow cooker or Instant Pot preparations for convenience.

Description

The Elderberry Syrup Recipe extracts rich flavor and medicinal properties from dried elderberries gently simmered with cinnamon sticks, ground ginger, and ground cloves in water. After simmering to reduce and concentrate, the mixture is strained to remove solids and combined with honey to create a sweet, spiced syrup. The honey adjusts sweetness and helps preserve the syrup, which has a thickened consistency suitable for dosing by the spoonful.

Its flavor features the deep berry base mellowed by warming spices and honey's sweetness. The syrup can be prepared traditionally in a saucepan or alternatively using a slow cooker over several hours or a pressure cooker like an Instant Pot for a faster method. Mashing the berries during straining ensures maximum juice extraction.

This syrup is taken daily in small amounts for general use or frequently at the onset of cold or flu symptoms, with measured doses for adults and children provided. It can be refrigerated for months, making it practical for sustained use. Optional substitutions include cinnamon powder instead of sticks, or sugar or glycerin in place of honey. Spice ingredients are optional and mainly enhance flavor.

The syrup is versatile in preparation and sweetening tailored to taste. It's important to store it refrigerated and use within recommended time. Adjusting sweetener after straining while syrup is still warm helps dissolution. The recipe can be scaled and varied per preferences or ingredient availability.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 5 cups water
  • 1 cup black elderberries dried (4 oz)
  • 4 cinnamon stick
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp cloves ground
  • 1-1/2 cups honey

Instructions

  1. Add 5 cups of water to a medium saucepan or dutch oven. Add in 1 cup dried elderberries, 4 cinnamon sticks, 2 tsp ground ginger and 1 tsp ground cloves. Stir to combine.
  2. Bring this all to a boil, cover and reduce to a simmer. Let simmer for 45 minutes until mixture is thickened and reduced by nearly half.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool for 1 hour to steep.
  4. Pour juice through a fine mesh strainer in to a large bowl. Remove cinnamon sticks. Then using the back of a spoon press and mash the berries that are in the strainer over the bowl to get any extra juices out of them. Stir in honey and mix until well combined.
  5. Pour carefully into a mason jar, cover and refrigerate. It should keep for several months in the fridge. Use daily as directed in notes below.

Notes

  • Recommended doses: 1/2 to 1 tsp daily for children over 1 year; 1/2 to 1 tbsp daily for adults.
  • At first signs of flu or cold, take the adult dose every 2-3 hours until symptoms reduce.
  • 1 cup dried elderberries equals about 4 oz.
  • Slow cooker method: cook all ingredients on low for 8 hours, then strain and add honey when cool.
  • Instant Pot method: cook ingredients on high pressure for 9 minutes, quick release, strain, cool, and stir in honey.
  • Cinnamon sticks, ginger, cloves, and honey are optional for flavor; cinnamon powder can substitute cinnamon sticks.
  • Honey can be replaced with sugar or glycerin; add sugar after straining while syrup is warm for easier dissolving.
  • Adjust the amount of sweetener according to taste preferences.
