Filipino Spaghetti (w/ Sweet Spaghetti Sauce)

Filipino Spaghetti features a sweet tomato-based sauce made with ground pork, banana ketchup, and sliced hotdogs, creating a unique twist on traditional spaghetti. The sauce combines savory and sweet elements with garlic and onions and finishes with seasoning to taste. Served over boiled spaghetti noodles, the dish is often topped with processed or cheddar cheese for extra creaminess and richness.

Description

This Filipino Spaghetti recipe centers on a distinctive sweet spaghetti sauce blending ground pork, tomato sauce, and banana ketchup, which contributes a subtle sweetness uncommon in traditional Italian versions. Sautéed onions and garlic provide aromatic depth, while sliced hotdogs add texture and a mild smoky flavor. The sauce is simmered to develop richness and slightly thicken before seasoning with fish sauce, brown sugar, salt, and black pepper to balance flavors.

The spaghetti noodles are cooked in salted boiling water until al dente and served topped with the sweet-savory meat sauce. An optional processed or cheddar cheese topping melts over the hot pasta, adding a creamy contrast to the sauce's tanginess.

This dish suits casual meals and gatherings, offering a familiar yet distinct flavor profile popular in Filipino cuisine. It pairs well with simple side dishes or as a standalone entrée.

Instructions

Filipino spaghetti sauce

  1. In a large pan over medium heat, add the vegetable oil and the onion. Saute the onion for 3-5 minutes or until translucent.
  2. Add the garlic and saute until fragrant or about 30 seconds.
  3. Add the ground pork and cook for about 5-7 minutes or until the meat is completely browned.
  4. Add the tomato sauce, banana ketchup, fish sauce, and the dark brown sugar and stir until combined with the meat mixture. Bring the mixture to a boil and then lower to medium low heat and continue to cook for 5 minutes to slightly thicken the sauce.
  5. Add the hot dogs and continue to cook for another 5 minutes.
  6. Taste test the sauce and add salt and black pepper, adjust to your preference.
  7. You have the option of adding cheese on top too.
  8. Add the spaghetti on a plate and ladle on the sauce. Serve immediately.

Spaghetti noodles

  1. In a large pot, add the water and bring to a boil over medium high heat. Add the salt and stir until dissolved. Add the dried spaghetti and follow instructions on the box to cook. This could take anywhere between 8-15 minutes depending on the pasta brand.
  2. Test your spaghetti by tasting one strand, it should be cooked throughout without any opaqueness in the center, but still slightly firm.
  3. Strain the pasta from the boiling water, reserving some of this water in case you need it to thin the sauce, and set the pasta aside. Do not rinse the pasta.
