Focaccia
Description
The dough combines warm water, olive oil, salt, flour, and instant yeast, mixed and beaten to form a sticky batter. After placing this in an oiled pan and allowing it to rise for an hour, the dough is poked with fingers to create dimples, then drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt, minced garlic, chopped rosemary, and oregano before baking.
Baking until golden brown results in a bread with a tender crumb, a slightly crisp crust, and aromatic herb accents. The dimpled surface helps hold the oil and seasonings, which enhance the bread’s flavor and moisture.
This focaccia can be served warm or at room temperature as an accompaniment to meals, a snack, or sliced for sandwiches. It tastes best freshly baked but can be reheated gently if needed.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil to drizzle onto the pan
Dough:
- 1 1/2 cups water warm
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon instant yeast or active dry yeast
Toppings:
- 1 teaspoon sea salt or kosher salt, flakes
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 tablespoons rosemary chopped
- 1 tablespoon oregano chopped
Instructions
- Drizzle about 2 tablespoons of olive oil into a 9" x 13" (22cm x 33cm) pan.
- Combine all of the dough ingredients and beat at high speed with an electric mixer for 60 seconds.
- Scoop the sticky batter into the prepared pan, cover the pan, and let it rise at room temperature for 60 minutes. While the dough is rising, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Gently poke the dough all over with your index finger.
- Drizzle it lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, minced garlic, rosemary, and oregano.
- Bake the bread until it's golden brown, about 30 minutes. Remove it from the oven, wait 5 minutes, then turn it out of the pan onto a rack and cut it into pieces. Serve warm or at room temperature.
