Garlic Parmesan Croutons Recipe
Description
The recipe uses cheese bread as the base for croutons, chosen for its firm texture and flavor. Bread is cubed and combined with olive oil and a mixture of grated Parmesan, nutritional yeast, and aromatic spices that provide umami and herbaceous notes. Coating the bread cubes evenly ensures consistent flavor and crisping.
Baking at a moderate oven temperature for 25-30 minutes with stirring halfway through promotes even toasting and prevents burning, resulting in croutons that are crisp outside while retaining some chewiness inside. The seasoning mix balances the cheesy, garlicky, and herbal notes to improve the taste of salads or soups.
These croutons can be stored and reheated, making them a handy topping to enhance meals. The use of nutritional yeast adds a cheesy profile for an extra dimension.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf cheese bread see notes
- 2 tablespoons Parmesan Cheese grated
- 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon salt sea salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper sea salt
- ½ cup olive oil
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut the bread into 1 ½ inch cubes and put them into a large bowl.
- Grate the parmesan cheese into a medium-sized bowl. Uses your fingers to crumble the cheese into a powder. Add the nutritional yeast, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper and mix well.
- Pour the olive oil over the bread cubes and sprinkle the spices over top. Use your hands to mix the bread cubes and ensure that each cube is well coated in oil and spices.
- Transfer the bread cubes to a baking sheet. If there is any of the cheese and spices in the bottom of the bowl, take a few pieces of bread and swipe them through it so make sure all of the flavor is used.
- Bake the croutons for 25-30 minutes, mixing them halfway through. They are done when they're golden brown and mostly crispy. They will continue to crisp as they cool.
Notes
- If cheese bread is unavailable, choose a sturdy, unsliced bread like focaccia for best results; soft sandwich bread is not recommended.
- Make sure to coat all bread pieces thoroughly with oil and seasoning for even flavor and crisp texture.
