Sweet & Smoky Dry Rub for Ribs
Description
The recipe for Sweet & Smoky Dry Rub for Ribs involves blending aromatic spices and brown sugar to create a robust seasoning mix. This blend is applied generously to two slabs of ribs, approximately three pounds each. The ribs can be cooked low and slow in the oven at 325°F for around 2.5 hours or alternatively smoked or grilled at a lower temperature for several hours until the meat becomes tender and falls off the bone.
The dry rub imparts deep smoky and sweet flavors balanced with a slight spiciness from the chili powder and flakes. Using a rub allows the seasoning to penetrate the meat surface, creating a flavorful crust during cooking.
The method provides flexibility between indoor oven baking and outdoor BBQ or smoking, catering to different preferences or equipment.
The spice calorie count excludes the ribs themselves, and oven cooking is suggested at a higher temperature to limit indoor cooking time.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup brown sugar packed
- 2 tablespoons smoked paprika
- 2 tablespoons sea salt flaked
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon black pepper ground
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes optional
Ribs
- two (3 pounds) labs ribs your favourite
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees or prepare your BBQ/Smoker for your own preference.
- Whisk together the dry rub ingredients.
- Use 1/3 of the mixture on each slab of ribs that you have. Each slab should be approximately 3 lbs ( see the ones in our photos for size reference.) Place any remaining rub in a sealed container for later.;
- Place the ribs on a lightly oiled baking sheet.
Oven Method
- Bake in the oven at 325F for at least 2 1/2 hours, until the meat is pulling off of the bone.
BBQ Method
- Cook in the smoker or the BBQ according to your favourite methods, usually around 250 ° for 4-5 hours until the meat is falling off the bone!
Notes
- Calorie information only accounts for the dry rub spices, not the ribs.
- Oven cooking at 325°F is faster but may differ from lower and slower BBQ or smoking methods.
- Reserve any leftover rub in a sealed container for future use.
