Greek Shrimp Saganaki

Shrimp saganaki is a quick and easy Greek dinner made with plump shrimp, ouzo liquor, fresh herbs and feta cheese in a zesty tomato sauce.

Ingredients

Servings

Shrimp

  • 1 1/2 lbs raw shrimp (26/30 count, peeled and deveined)
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup Greek ouzo (optional)

Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium red onion diced
  • 2 green onions small slices (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon red chili flakes
  • 4 roma tomatoes diced

Toppings

  • 1 tablespoon fresh mint chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill chopped
  • 8 ounces feta cheese crumbled

Instructions

Sauce

  1. In a skillet over medium heat add the olive oil. After a minute add onions and saute for 2 minutes. Add garlic, salt and chili flakes, cook another minute. Stir in the tomatoes and bring to a simmer. Cover, turn heat to low and cook 5 minutes (start shrimp).

Shrimp

  1. Peel and devein shrimp, rinse with water and pat dry. Toss with salt and pepper.
  2. In a large skillet over high heat add the olive oil. After a minute add the shrimp and cook 1 minute per side. Deglaze pan with Ouzo (optional).
  3. Spoon tomato sauce mixture over shrimp, add the herbs and feta cheese. Cover and cook on low for 2 minutes. Cheese should be melted. Serve immediately.
