Description
The recipe begins by buttering one side of four slices of white sandwich bread. Two slices are placed butter-side down into a heated skillet, topped with shredded sharp cheddar cheese, and covered with the remaining slices butter-side up. After cooking until golden brown and the cheese melts, the sandwiches rest for five minutes to firm up slightly.
Once cooled, the crusts are cut off and reserved for dipping. The sandwiches are then cut into one-inch squares, creating crunchy, cheesy croutons. Their buttery, crisp texture with melted cheese inside offers an easy way to add flavor and texture to dishes like salads or soups.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon butter at room temperature
- 4 lices white sandwich bread
- 4 ounces cheddar cheese shredded, sharp
Instructions
- Spread the butter on one side of each of the slices of bread.
- Heat a large frying pan over medium heat. Add two slices of the bread, buttered side down. Sprinkle the cheese on top of the bread and then top with the other two slices buttered side up.
- Cook for 2-3 minutes, until the bottom is golden brown. Flip the sandwiches over and cook for another 2-3 minutes until both sides are golden and the cheese has melted.
- Remove the grilled cheese sandwiches from the pan and let them cool for 5 minutes. Use a serrated knife to cut off the crusts - save them for dipping in soup! Then, cut the sandwiches into 1-inch croutons.
