Halloween Traybake Cake

A fluffy black and orange traybake cake with white chocolate ghosts on top.

Ingredients

Traybake cake

  • 250 g softened butter
  • 250 g caster sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 Medium eggs
  • 250 g self-raising flour
  • 2 Tablespoons milk
  • Orange food colouring (start with a small amount then add more as needed)
  • Purple food colouring

Black frosting

  • 70 g softened butter
  • 300 g icing sugar
  • 1-2 Tablespoons milk
  • 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
  • black food colouring

Decoration

  • Homemade white chocolate ghosts
  • Halloween cake decorations and/or sprinkles (I used Cake Decor Halloween spooky mix sprinkles and Dr. Oetker chocolate Halloween decorations)

Instructions

Traybake cake

  1. Preheat your oven to 180℃ (160℃ for fan ovens). Line an 8x10-inch tin with baking paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar then stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Mix in the eggs and flour, a little bit at a time, until you have a smooth cake batter. Add the milk as needed to loosen the batter.
  4. Divide the cake batter into two bowls. Stir the orange food colouring into one and the purple food colouring into the other.
  5. Place spoonfuls of cake batter into your tin, alternating the colours as you go. Then use a toothpick to briefly swirl them together (but not too much).
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Don't worry if the colours look a little faded- they'll still be super vibrant when you cut into the cake.
  7. Let the cake cool in the tin for around 10 minutes then flip it out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

Frosting

  1. Add the butter to a bowl and mix in the icing sugar a little bit at a time, using the milk to loosen it as needed.
  2. Stir in the vanilla extract and black food colouring.
  3. Spread the frosting over your cooled traybake cake. Top with white chocolate ghosts and other edible Halloween decorations.

Notes

  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
