Healthy Sloppy Joes

An easy recipe for the BEST Sloppy Joes using all simple ingredients. Full of sweet and savory flavors for a delicious meal!

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp avocado oil
  • 1 small yellow onion finely chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef or ground turkey I use 90% ground beef
  • ½ cup unsweetened ketchup
  • ¼ cup unsweetened BBQ sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard optional
  • Sea salt and black pepper to taste

For Serving:

  • 4 Gluten-Free Hamburger Buns

Instructions

  1. Add all of the ingredients for the sauce to a small bowl or measuring cup and stir until combined.
  2. Heat the avocado oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the onion. Sauté, stirring occasionally, until the onion has softened, about 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in the bell pepper and garlic and continue cooking for another 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Scoot the vegetables off to the side and place the ground beef in the center of the skillet to allow it to brown for a few minutes before flipping.
  4. Allow the meat to brown on the other side for a minute or two before using a spatula to break it up into smaller pieces.
  5. Pour the sauce into the skillet and stir well. Continue cooking until the sauce is very thick and the beef has cooked through.
  6. Serve Sloppy Joes on your choice of toasted bun with added condiments or extras such as cheese, pickles, coleslaw, etc.
