Mississippi Sloppy Joes

These sloppy joes are not quite as sloppy as the traditional, since they aren't coated in a thick tomato sauce. Instead, these are liberally seasoned and topped with tangy pepperoncini peppers for a fun twist on Mississippi roast.

Instructions

  1. Add the ground beef to a large skillet over medium heat and brown, breaking up the meat as it cooks. Drain the fat from the beef.
  2. Add the butter to the skillet with the beef over low heat and let melt.
  3. Once melted, sprinkle the au jus and ranch seasoning over the top and stir well to coat.
  4. Stir in the pepper rings and juice plus 1/2 cup of water and let cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes. These won't be very saucy, but the liquid will reduce down.
  5. Spoon the meat mixture over the sandwich buns and serve hot.

Notes

  • The “Mississippi” mix of seasonings (au jus and ranch) can be a bit salty. If you’re sensitive to salt or just want to reduce the sodium you can swap the au jus for beef gravy mix (less sodium) and/or reduce the amount of au jus and ranch seasoning altogether.
  • As written this recipe does have a bit of spice when you bite into one of the pepper rings. If you’d like to cut the spice down, you can reduce the amount of peppers called for or just serve them over the top of the sandwich like you would pickles for those who like the spice.
  • We almost always toast our hamburger buns before using. To do so, spread the insides of each bun with a bit of softened butter and grill in a skillet over medium heat until golden.
