Hearty Marinara Sauce

This Hearty Marinara Sauce starts with sautéed onions and garlic in olive oil, simmered with canned plum tomatoes, tomato paste, and dried basil. Slow simmering thickens the sauce and blends robust tomato flavors with aromatic herbs, producing a thick and savory tomato sauce.

Description

Hearty Marinara Sauce features diced onions sautéed until soft in olive oil with garlic added for fragrance. Canned plum tomatoes combine with tomato paste and dried basil to form the base. The mixture is brought to a boil and then simmered, allowing flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken. Breaking up tomatoes during cooking ensures an even texture. The final sauce has a rich tomato flavor, lightly herbaceous from the basil, with a balance of sweetness and acidity.

The sauce's consistency can be adjusted by blending for smoothness or left chunky as desired. It serves well as a foundational tomato sauce for pasta, pizzas, or other dishes that benefit from a tomato-based sauce with a gentle herb presence.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion diced
  • 1 pinch salt optional
  • 6 to 7 cloves garlic minced
  • 28 ounces canned plum tomatoes (1 can)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons basil or more, dried

Instructions

  1. Add olive oil to a saucepan (at least 3 qt) over medium heat.
  2. Add the diced onions and saute until softened, for around 5 minutes. Add a pinch of salt.
  3. Once soften, add the garlic and cook until fragrant, around 1 minute.
  4. Add the canned plum tomatoes, tomato paste, and basil, and bring the pot to a boil before lowering the heat to simmer the sauce.
  5. Stir occasionally, breaking up the tomatoes with a wooden spoon by pressing them into the side of the pot. Be sure to give the sauce a taste halfway to see if it needs any additional salt.
  6. After around 20 minutes, your sauce should have thickened. If you want a smoother sauce, you can use an immersion blender on the sauce.
