Homemade Marinara Sauce
Description
This Homemade Marinara Sauce uses high-quality ingredients including extra virgin olive oil, finely diced onions, and minced garlic sautéed until fragrant. San Marzano canned tomatoes provide a rich and authentic tomato base, combined with dried oregano, salt, black pepper, fresh basil sprigs, and optionally red pepper flakes for slight heat. The sauce is simmered to reduce and thicken while allowing flavors to meld together, resulting in a chunky, aromatic tomato sauce perfect for pasta, dipping, or cooking uses.
The sauce offers a slightly rustic texture thanks to the crushed tomatoes, but can be blended smooth if preferred. Fresh basil is removed before serving to maintain fresh herbal notes without overpowering texture. This marinara stores well in the refrigerator for up to four days and freezes for two months, making it convenient for make-ahead use in many dishes. Reheat gently on the stove for best flavor retention.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/3 cup onion finely diced
- 2 1/2 teaspoons garlic minced
- 28 ounce can whole San Marzano tomatoes coarsely crushed or chopped
- 1/4 teaspoon oregano dried
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional, crushed
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 prigs basil fresh
Instructions
- Place the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.
- Add the onion and cook for 3-4 minutes or until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Add the tomatoes and all their juices from the can, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, fresh basil and 1/4 cup water.
- Stir to combine. Bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and cook for 20 minutes or until sauce has started to thicken. Taste and add more salt and pepper if needed.
- Remove the basil sprigs and discard. This makes a chunky sauce. If you prefer a smooth sauce, you can puree some or all of it in a blender. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Notes
- Use high quality extra virgin olive oil and authentic San Marzano tomatoes marked "D.O.P" for best flavor.
- For smoother sauce, puree to desired consistency after cooking.
- Refrigerate leftovers for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
- Thaw frozen sauce in the fridge overnight and reheat on the stove until warmed through before serving.
