Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe

This homemade pizza sauce blends canned tomato sauce with garlic, sugar or honey, balsamic vinegar, Italian seasoning, sea salt, and optional chili flakes. It is simmered to concentrate flavors and thicken slightly while retaining a fresh tomato taste, ideal for spreading on pizzas or as a dipping sauce.

Description

The Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe uses simple pantry staples to create a balanced sauce perfect for pizza bases. Tomato sauce is combined with finely minced garlic and sweetened with sugar or honey to counter acidity. Balsamic vinegar adds mild tang and depth, while Italian seasoning delivers herbaceous notes typical of pizza sauces. A pinch of sea salt enhances overall taste, and optional chili flakes provide mild heat if desired.

By simmering the sauce uncovered at medium heat, some moisture evaporates, thickening the sauce lightly without losing freshness. Stirring every few minutes prevents scorching. Partially covering the pot when the sauce begins to splatter controls evaporation speed while avoiding over-thickening.

The sauce can be used immediately or chilled and stored in the refrigerator for up to five days. It also freezes well, maintaining its flavor and texture for later use. This sauce forms a flavorful foundation to layer with cheese and toppings on homemade pizzas.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 ounce tomato sauce canned
  • 1 clove garlic finely minced
  • 2 teaspoons sugar can use honey
  • 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ¼ teaspoon salt sea salt
  • 1 pinch chili flakes optional

Instructions

  1. Add the tomato sauce, garlic, sugar, balsamic, Italian seasoning, sea salt, and chili flakes to a small pot with high sides.
  2. Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat then reduce the heat to medium. Let it simmer with the lid off for 10-15 minutes, stirring every few minutes. When it starts to splatter a lot, partially cover the pot with a lid - DO NOT cover the pot completely or the pizza sauce won't thicken.
  3. Use the pizza sauce right away or store it in your fridge for up to 5 days. It also freezes very well!
