Honey Soy Chicken Drumsticks
Description
This recipe begins by whisking together honey, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, olive oil, and black pepper to create a marinade. Chicken drumsticks with skin and bone are coated and allowed to marinate for several hours, enhancing flavor infusion. Baking at 375°F for 45 minutes, turning halfway, ensures even cooking and browned skin.
The chicken develops a sticky glaze from the honey and soy during baking, resulting in a tender, juicy inside with slightly crispy skin. The dish has a balanced sweet-salty profile with warm garlic and ginger notes.
It can be served with garnishes like chopped parsley for a touch of freshness and presents well as a satisfying main course for family meals.
For lower fat, skinless drumsticks can be used, though the skin adds texture. This recipe stores well in the fridge for several days and can be frozen uncooked in marinade for convenient future use.
Ingredients
- 3 pounds chicken drumstick bone in, with skin
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 5 tablespoon honey
- ¼ cup soy sauce low sodium
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon ginger freshly grated, ginger powder works as well, about 1/2 tsp
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
- 1 tablespoon parsley chopped, for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the chicken: In a 9x13-inch casserole dish, whisk all the ingredients together, excluding the chicken. Add chicken and toss making sure each piece is coated with the marinade. Next, cover with plastic wrap and marinate for a couple hours. I kept mine in the fridge overnight.
- Preheat the oven: To 375°F degrees.
- Bake the chicken: Remove the plastic wrap and transfer the dish to the oven. Bake the drumsticks for 45 minutes or until a meat thermometer registers 175°F. Make sure to turn them over half way through. This way they will get nice color all around.
- Garnish and serve: Aim for garnishing the chicken with parsley and serve with the additional sauce.
Notes
- Skinless drumsticks reduce fat and calories but skin adds crispness and flavor.
- Marinate chicken at least 2 hours or overnight for best flavor absorption.
- Flip drumsticks halfway through baking to promote even cooking and browning.
- Store cooked chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days; reheat gently.
- You can freeze raw drumsticks with marinade in a sealed bag for up to 3 months; thaw before baking.
