How to Make Loose Leaf Tea

Making loose leaf tea involves warming the teapot, steeping quality tea leaves in just-boiled water for several minutes, and serving shortly after. This approach preserves delicate flavors and allows control over strength and flavor balance. The method highlights the importance of water temperature and timing for an optimal cup.

Description

The process begins by pouring boiling water into the teapot to warm it, which helps maintain the tea’s temperature during steeping. Next, the water is freshly boiled and poured over measured loose leaf tea placed in the teapot or an infuser. A steeping time of 3 to 5 minutes lets the flavors infuse to a preferred strength.

After steeping, the tea is ready to serve. Adding milk is traditional for some teas, particularly British styles, with whole milk preferred over cream. Sugar is optional depending on taste. Any stray leaves remaining can settle at the bottom or be filtered using a tea strainer, although this is often unnecessary.

Do not reboil water as it affects flavor, and using good quality loose leaf tea is essential. Adjust tea quantity and steeping time with experience to suit personal taste preferences.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 tsp loose leaf tea (quality)
  • 2 cups water (cold)

Instructions

Warm the teapot:

  1. Boil about a cup of water in the kettle, and pour it into the teapot. Put the lid on and leave it.

Make the tea:

  1. Add the cold water to the kettle and just before it comes to a boil, empty the hot water from the teapot, and bring it over to the kettle. Add the loose leaf tea directly into the teapot (or you can use an infuser if you have one). Pour the boiling water into the teapot, and close the lid.

Steep the tea:

  1. Set a timer for 3 to 5 minutes (I prefer 5 minutes), and allow the loose leaf tea to brew. If you have a tea cosy, you can put it on the teapot.
Equipments used:

Notes

  • Use freshly boiled water but avoid reboiling to preserve tea flavor quality.
  • Good quality loose leaf tea enhances the brewing experience and taste.
  • Add milk after pouring the tea; whole milk is preferred for British-style tea; cream is not used.
  • Sugar is optional based on taste preferences.
  • A tea strainer can catch any stray leaves, though allowing them to settle also works.
  • Experiment with tea leaf amount and steeping time to customize strength to personal liking.
