How to Make Muesli
Description
How to Make Muesli features a blend of old-fashioned oats, oat bran or wheat bran, almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds, and a light dusting of cinnamon and salt, all toasted together to develop a toasty flavor and crisp texture. After toasting and cooling, chopped dates and raisins are incorporated to provide natural sweetness and chewiness, balancing the crunchy elements. The final mixture can be served right away or allowed to cool completely before storing in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two months.
This muesli is dry and shelf-stable, allowing it to be combined with milk, yogurt, or fruit at serving. The toasting step deepens the flavors of the nuts and grains without added sugar or oils, delivering a wholesome cereal option that offers texture variety from crunchy nuts and seeds to soft dried fruit.
Because the mixture is stored dry, it is convenient for make-ahead breakfast or snack use. Adjusting the quantity of dried fruit at the end allows personalization of sweetness. Using rolled oats rather than instant oats preserves the crunchy texture that defines this muesli.
Ingredients
- 3 cups old-fashioned oats
- ½ cup oat bran optional, or wheat bran
- ½ cup almonds raw, sliced
- ½ cup walnut roughly chopped, raw
- ¼ cup pumpkin seeds
- ¼ cup flaxseeds
- ¾ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup dates chopped
- ¼ cup raisins
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Combine the oats, wheat bran, if using, almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds, cinnamon and salt in a large baking sheet. Toast for 20 minutes.
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the mixture to cool for 10 minutes.
- Add the dates and raisins and toss the mixture until everything is evenly combined. Serve immediately or allow it to cool completely, and store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to two months.
Notes
- This recipe yields about 6 cups or 24 quarter-cup servings of muesli, making it suitable for extended storage.
- Store the muesli at room temperature in an airtight container to maintain freshness for up to two months.
- To vary sweetness, adjust the amount of dates and raisins added after toasting.
