Italian Dressing
Description
To make the Italian Dressing, olive oil is combined with red wine vinegar or white wine vinegar, bringing acidity and smoothness to the mix. Italian seasoning adds herbs that define the classic flavor, while onion powder and garlic powder contribute subtle savory depth. A pinch of red pepper flakes introduces mild heat. Honey balances the acidity and spice with sweetness, and freshly squeezed lemon juice brightens the overall taste. Thorough shaking creates an emulsified dressing that coats salad greens evenly.
This dressing enhances green salads, pasta salads, or vegetables needing a flavorful but approachable vinaigrette. It should be shaken before each use since the oil and vinegar separate upon standing. Properly stored in a sealed jar in the refrigerator, it remains fresh for up to two weeks.
Both red and white wine vinegars work effectively; red wine vinegar imparts a familiar color and subtle fruitiness, but either can be used based on preference or availability.
Ingredients
- ¾ cup olive oil
- ¼ cup red wine vinegar or white wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoon honey
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
Instructions
- Blend ingredients: Add all the ingredients to a jar, place the lid and close it. Shake it well until all the ingredients are well blended.
- Serve: Serve drizzled over your favorite salad. The dressing will need to be shaken again before serving.
Notes
- This recipe yields about one cup of dressing and should be shaken well before each use to re-emulsify separated ingredients.
- Use either red or white wine vinegar according to preference; red wine vinegar adds traditional color but does not significantly change flavor.
- Adjust seasoning to taste, increasing herbs or honey as desired for stronger flavor.
- Store dressing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks to maintain freshness.
