These brownies are an American classic and so easy to make with everyday pantry ingredients. Turns out dark, rich, intense, chewy fudge brownies.

  • 1 tick (4 oz) unsalted butter plus more for buttering the pan
  • 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs lightly beaten
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup roughly chopped walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C). Butter an 8-inch square baking pan. Line the pan with parchment paper and butter the paper.
  2. Melt the 1 stick (4 oz) unsalted butter and 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate together in a large saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly, until combined.
  3. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the 1 cup granulated sugar.
  4. Add the 2 large eggs and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract and stir to make a smooth batter.
  5. Add the ¼ cup all-purpose flour, ¼ teaspoon salt, and 1 cup roughly chopped walnuts, if using, and stir until incorporated.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 40 to 45 minutes. Let cool on a rack. Cut into squares and serve.

Notes

  • Cut them cleanly--To cut clean, even squares, let the brownies cool completely before slicing.
  • Storage--Store the brownies in a sealed container at room temperature for up to 4 days, or freeze for longer storage. Separate layers with sheets of parchment paper to prevent them from sticking together.
