Keema Matar

Keema Matar combines minced meat with peas, tomatoes, and aromatic spices such as cumin, coriander, turmeric, and chili powder. The dish features a savory and mildly spiced flavor with tender meat and soft peas. It is a traditional comfort food served with naan or other breads and can be prepared on the stovetop for a rich and hearty meal.

Description

In this Keema Matar recipe, minced meat is cooked with olive oil, cumin seeds, ginger paste, chopped garlic, diced onions, and tomatoes. The spices—salt, chili powder, turmeric, coriander, and cumin powder—are toasted to release their aromas before meat is browned and simmered with water. Frozen peas are added near the end of cooking, along with fresh green chilies and coriander for brightness.

Throughout the process, the meat softens and absorbs the complex spice blend, yielding a thick, flavorful mixture with tender peas providing a sweet contrast. Cooking time allows the sauce to thicken and flavors to meld well.

Keema Matar is traditionally served hot with fresh garlic naan bread, complementing the savory and spicy profile. The dish can be enjoyed as a standalone meal or part of a larger spread, offering a satisfying texture from the minced meat and peas.
