Lemon Berry Prosecco Sangria
Description
This sangria begins by muddling lemon slices and sugar together to release oils from the lemon peel and dissolve the sugar, creating a citrusy, sweet base. Sliced strawberries are added and muddled to release their juices and complement the lemon flavor.
Chilled prosecco is poured over the fruit mixture, adding effervescence and dryness that balances the sweetness and acidity. The sangria can be served immediately over ice or chilled briefly to let flavors meld, while avoiding dilution from melting ice in the pitcher.
This cocktail works well as a light, slightly fruity aperitif or party drink. Variations include adding fresh mint during muddling or substituting other sparkling wines such as brut champagne or sparkling rosé. Sweetener alternatives like honey or maple syrup can replace sugar if desired.
Muddling can be performed with a muddler or the back of a spoon. The sangria is best consumed within about 8 hours to retain prosecco's bubbles and avoid flavor loss.
Ingredients
- 1 lemon thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- ¼ cup strawberries de-stemmed & sliced
- 750 ml prosecco chilled, bottle
Instructions
- Place the lemons in the bottom of a pitcher or punch bowl.
- Sprinkle the sugar on top and muddle the sugar into the lemons.
- Add the sliced strawberries.
- Muddle the strawberries in with the sugar and lemon slices.
- Add the prosecco to the pitcher.
- Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
- Add ice to four glasses, pour the sangria over the ice and serve.
Notes
- Do not add ice to the pitcher as it will dilute the sangria when melted; instead, add ice to individual glasses when serving.
- Muddling fruit with sugar extracts fresh juices and flavors; use a muddler or the back of a spoon if a muddler is unavailable.
- Prepare the sangria up to 8 hours ahead; beyond that, the bubbles from prosecco will diminish.
- Optional: Add 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves with the fruit during muddling for herbal notes.
- Substitute prosecco with sparkling rosé or brut champagne if preferred.
- Use honey, maple syrup, or agave syrup as alternative sweeteners instead of sugar as desired.
