Lemon Pepper Croutons Recipe
Description
This recipe starts with unsliced sourdough bread cut into coarse cubes. The bread is coated in olive oil and seasoned with a lemon pepper blend complemented by sea salt and garlic powder if the seasoning lacks those. Baking begins at a low temperature (35°F is likely a typo; typically baking would be at a higher temperature) with parchment-lined trays holding the cubes and lemon slices.
After 15 minutes baking, lemons are squeezed over the croutons, releasing pulp and juice that enhance the citrus flavor and moisture before returning the tray to the oven. The final bake lasts 15-20 minutes until croutons achieve a crisp golden finish. This method produces flavorful croutons with a balance of tart lemon and savory seasoning.
Use croutons to add texture and brightness to salads and soups. Adjust seasoning based on your lemon pepper blend's salt and garlic content to achieve balanced flavors.
Ingredients
- ⅓ loaf sourdough bread unsliced
- 4 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 teaspoons lemon pepper seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt see notes, each
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder see notes, each
- 2 lemon slices
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 35 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Cut the bread into small cubes and place them into a bowl. You'll want 4 cups of bread cubes.
- Add the oil, lemon pepper seasoning, and (if using) salt and garlic powder to the bread cubes. Use your hands to mix them well then spread them out on the baking tray. Add the slices of lemon to the tray.
- Bake the croutons for 15 minutes then remove the tray from the oven. Use tongs to squeeze the lemons over the croutons (some of the lemon pulp will come out - this is a good thing!) then mix them around well. Return them to the oven to bake for another 15-20 minutes, until they are golden and crispy.
Notes
- If your lemon pepper seasoning lacks salt or garlic, add ¼ teaspoon sea salt and ¼ teaspoon garlic powder as indicated.
- Using homemade lemon pepper seasoning that includes salt and garlic may allow omitting those additions.
