Melon sangria
Description
This Melon Sangria starts with a mix of watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon balls combined with lime juice and honey for brightness and sweetness. Grappa or a similar clear grape brandy adds depth and warmth. The mixture is chilled for at least an hour to marry the flavors.
Chilled moscato wine is added later to enhance the fruity profile and sweetness, then refrigerated again allowing the ingredients to blend thoroughly. Before serving, sparkling water is added for fizz and balance, and the sangria is garnished with fresh mint leaves, lime slices, and either melon balls or regular ice cubes.
The cocktail is light, fruity, and effervescent with a harmonious balance of sweet melon and citrus notes accented by the wine and brandy. It suits warm weather occasions and offers a twist on traditional sangria by focusing on melon flavors.
A non-alcoholic version replaces the wine and grappa with sparkling white grape juice and sparkling lemonade for similar taste and bubbly texture without alcohol.
Ingredients
- melon watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, mixed balls, ~3 cups
- 2-4 tablespoons honey adjust to taste
- 1 lime juiced
- ¼ cup grappa adjust to taste - can also use pisco or a clear grape brandy, to ½ cup
- 1 moscato wine 750 ml bottle chilled
- sparkling water chilled, ~ 1 ½ cups
To serve and garnish:
- mint leaves
- lime slices
- melon or regular ice cubes, frozen balls as ice cubes
Instructions
- Place the melon balls in a large pitcher, add the honey (2 tablespoons to start), lime juice, and ¼ cup of grappa. Mix gently and let rest in fridge for 1-2 hours or until 1 hour before serving.
- Add the moscato wine, mix gently, taste and add more honey or grappa if desired. Keep in mind that you will top it off with sparkling water right before serving, so it’s okay if it’s on the sweeter/stronger side. Refrigerate for another hour.
- Right before serving, add ice (or frozen melon balls as ice cubes), lime slices and mint leaves to garnish, and top off with sparkling water. You can prepare the final mix in the pitcher or serve it directly into glasses with melon ice cubes and top off each glass with the sparkling water.
Notes
- For a mocktail, omit moscato and grappa and substitute sparkling white grape juice and sparkling lemonade.
