Mongolian Beef Sticks

Mongolian Beef Sticks feature marinated sirloin steak strips threaded on skewers and grilled, delivering smoky, sweet, and savory flavors highlighted by a brown sugar-soy sauce marinade with garlic and ginger. Served with a tangy and spicy dipping sauce made from mayonnaise, sour cream, sriracha, lime juice, and garlic powder, these skewers are garnished with chopped peanuts for texture and flavor contrast.

Description

This recipe uses sirloin steak cut into long thin strips marinated in a blend of soy sauce, dark brown sugar, garlic, ginger, peanut oil, and red pepper flakes. The marinade tenderizes and infuses the beef with a balance of savory depth, sweetness, and a mild spicy kick. After marinating for at least three hours, the beef is skewered and grilled on high direct heat for about six to seven minutes per side, developing flavorful grill marks and a caramelized exterior while keeping the inside tender.

The paired spicy dipping sauce made with mayonnaise, sour cream, sriracha, lime juice, and garlic powder adds a cooling yet zesty element that complements the grilled beef. Garnishing with chopped peanuts provides crunch and an additional layer of nuttiness balancing the sweet and savory flavors.

The preparation involves soaking wooden skewers to prevent burning during grilling and basting the skewers with marinade just before cooking to enhance flavor and moisture. This dish is suitable for sharing as an appetizer or alongside rice or vegetables as a main course.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 1/2 pounds sirloin steak
  • peanut for garnish, chopped
  • wood skewers

Marinade:

  • 2 Tablespoons peanut oil or veg. oil if you are allergic
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 Tablespoon garlic minced
  • red pepper flakes to taste
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar

Spicy Dipping Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha hot sauce
  • 1 teaspoon lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Mix together the marinade ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Cut the beef into long thin strips, then stir it into the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours. About an hour before serving, mix together the sauce ingredients and refrigerate. Then soak the wood skewers in a water bath. (This will keep them from catching on fire during grilling).
  3. About 20 minutes before serving, thread the meat onto the skewers, baste the meat with some of the marinades, then discard the excess.
  4. Grill for about 6 to 7 minutes on each side over direct high heat, only turning once.
  5. Garnish with chopped peanuts and serve with spicy dipping sauce.
