Ingredients

Servings
  • ½ pound ground beef
  • ½ pound ground pork
  • 2 garlic crushed and chopped, cloves
  • 3 tbsp parsley finely chopped, flatleaf, fresh
  • 2 tbsp Italian seasoning or plain dried oregano
  • ½ tbsp smoked paprika optional
  • 1 egg beaten, large
  • olive oil for frying
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese grated
  • 1 onion finely chopped, medium
  • 1 passata or Marinara sauce, jar
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste puree
  • 2 basil handfuls, fresh
  • 2 Palmini lasagna in cans
  • 2 to 3 cups mozzarella cheese grated
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 360⁰F
  2. Prepare the Palmini sheets by draining from the can and immersing them in milk for 30 minutes to remove their natural acidity
  3. Remove Palmini from milk and lay on paper towel until dry, turning over to speed up the drying process
  4. Heat the olive oil and gently fry the onions in a medium saucepan until translucent, all the while stirring gently
  5. Add the garlic and tomato paste and continue stirring
  6. Add the ground beef and pork and the Italian seasoning or oregano. Mix well
  7. Season with salt and pepper, according to preference
  8. Stir the meat and seasoning mix until cooked through, evenly
  9. Add the Passata or Marinara sauce, reserve around ¼ cup for later
  10. Mix the Ricotta and parmesan, and the egg in a bowl
  11. Spread a thin layer of the reserved sauce on the bottom of a 16 x 9-inch baking dish
  12. Layer the ingredients in the following order: Palmini strips, meat mixture, Ricotta mixture, Mozzarella cheese, and repeat the process
  13. Sprinkle the smoked paprika on top of the final layer for some additional taste and color
  14. Place the prepared dish in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 1 hour or until the cheese starts to bubble
  15. Turn the oven selector to broil and grill the dish until it starts to brown slightly while keeping an eye on it. It should take only a few minutes
  16. Remove from your oven and garnish with basil, leaving to cool for around 10 minutes
  17. Your dish is ready to serve!
