PIG SHOTS (OVEN BAKED)

Pig Shots are a delicious and easy appetizer or snack. They consist of a savory filling, often a combination of cream cheese, sausage, and cheese, encased in a crescent roll or biscuit dough cup and baked until golden brown.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a mini muffin tin (or regular muffin tin if making larger pig shots).
  2. Combine filling ingredients: In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, cooked sausage crumbles, shredded cheddar cheese, and green onions (if using). Mix well until everything is evenly combined.
  3. Prepare dough: If using crescent roll dough, unroll the dough and separate the triangles. If using biscuit dough, you can either cut each biscuit in half or use them whole for larger pig shots. For crescent roll dough, gently press the seams together to create larger rectangles, then cut each rectangle into smaller squares (about 2-inch squares). For biscuit dough, you can flatten the biscuits slightly.
  4. Fill dough cups: Press each square of dough into a muffin cup, forming a small cup.
  5. Fill with mixture: Spoon about 1-2 tablespoons of the cream cheese mixture into each dough cup.
  6. Bake: Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  7. Cool and serve: Let the pig shots cool in the muffin tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a serving plate. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Sausage: You can use any type of breakfast sausage that you like. Italian sausage or chorizo also work well for a spicy kick. Make sure it is fully cooked before adding it to the cream cheese mixture.
  • Cheese: Cheddar cheese is a classic choice, but you can use other cheeses that melt well, such as Monterey Jack, pepper jack, or a Mexican blend.
  • Dough: Crescent roll dough and biscuit dough both work well. Crescent rolls will give you a flakier crust, while biscuits will be a bit more dense.
  • Filling Variations: Get creative with the filling! You can add other ingredients, such as chopped jalapeños, bacon bits, or different herbs and spices.
