Pizza Gnocchi
Description
This dish starts by browning turkey sausage with diced onion and Italian seasoning for an aromatic base. The uncooked potato gnocchi and vodka sauce are then stirred in to evenly coat the gnocchi with the creamy tomato sauce. The mixture is transferred to a casserole dish and topped with shredded cheeses and halved turkey pepperoni slices, delivering the essence of pizza flavors in a comforting baked form.
Covering the dish with foil during baking ensures the gnocchi become tender as they cook through in the sauce. Finishing under the broiler melts and lightly browns the cheese topping for a desirable texture and appearance. Resting the casserole before serving helps it set for easier portions.
Substitutions like ground beef or pork are possible for the sausage, and removing excess rendered fat from cooking prevents greasiness. Leftovers reheat well in the microwave covered with a paper towel.
Ingredients
- ½ tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion small, white
- 14 oz lean turkey sausage
- ½ tbsp Italian seasoning
- 1 box (16 oz) potato gnocchi DeLallo brand
- 1 jar (24 oz) vodka sauce Rao's brand
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
- ½ cup Italian cheese mix I used provolone + mozzarella, shredded
- ½ cup turkey pepperoni Boar's Head brand
- basil for garnish, fresh
Instructions
- First, finely dice the onion with a vegetable chopper.
- Then, heat a skillet to medium heat and add oil, diced onion, italian seasoning, and turkey sausage. Sauté for 8-10 minutes or until meat is thoroughly cooked and onions have browned.
- Turn off the heat and add the Vodka Sauce and uncooked potato gnocchi. Stir together so everything is evenly coated.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Pour everything from the skillet into the casserole dish.
- Top the gnocchi with cheese. Cut the pepperonis in half and scatter over top.
- Cover the dish with tinfoil and bake for 25 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and gnocchi is cooked through (tender enough to be able to be poked with a fork).
- Remove the tinfoil after baking and place under the broiler for 2-3 minutes to bubble the cheese.
- Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. This’ll allow the dish to set a bit for easier serving. Enjoy!
Notes
- Remove excess rendered oil from cooking the sausage to avoid a greasy casserole.
- Turkey sausage can be replaced with ground beef, pork, or lamb to vary flavor.
- Cover the dish with foil during baking to ensure gnocchi cook properly and retain moisture.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days and reheat in short intervals in the microwave, covering to prevent splattering.
