Prosciutto and Melon (Prosciutto e Melone)

Prosciutto and Melon features ripe cantaloupe wedges wrapped in thinly sliced prosciutto di Parma. The sweet, juicy melon complements the salty, delicate cured ham, creating a balance of flavors that is both light and satisfying. Description

To prepare, the cantaloupe is halved, seeded, cut into wedges, and peeled for easy handling. Each wedge is wrapped with thin slices of prosciutto, highlighting the contrast between the fruit's sweetness and the ham's saltiness. The assembly is arranged on a serving platter for an elegant presentation.

A final drizzle of high-quality honey or balsamic glaze enriches the dish, adding complexity without overpowering the natural flavors. Optionally, fresh basil leaves can be added for color and a hint of freshness. The prosciutto's delicate texture pairs well with the firm yet succulent melon, making each bite fresh and balanced.

Ingredients

  • 1 cantaloupe
  • 4 to 5 ounces prosciutto di Parma thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp honey more to your liking (I used this Greek honey, or balsamic glaze
  • basil optional, for garnish leaves

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cantaloupe and cut it into wedges. I find it easier to peel the cantaloupe, once you cut it. So, first, cut the cantaloupe in half. Using a spoon, remove the seeds. Then cut each half into wedges and peel them. 
  2. Wrap the prosciutto around the cantaloupe wedges and arrange them on a serving platter (left some wedges without prosciutto, since I had more cantaloupe to use up).
  3. Drizzle a little bit of balsamic glaze or quality honey (or both, if you like) If using, arrange a few basil leaves on the platter. I loved the addition of fresh basil leaves for a pop of color and freshness, but this is totally optional. 
  4. Serve immediately or chill for a few hours until ready to serve.

Notes

  • This pairing also works well with other ripe fruits such as figs, pears, or peaches for similar sweet-salty contrasts.
  • Using quality Mediterranean ingredients like Greek honey or authentic prosciutto enhances the dish's flavor.
  • Serve chilled or at room temperature according to preference.
