Sausage Rolls
Description
The sausage roll filling is prepared by browning ground pork sausage and diced thawed potatoes, seasoning with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder to develop a flavorful base. Shredded cheddar cheese is added for richness and a slight sharpness. The filling is distributed in mounds along halves of thawed puff pastry sheets, leaving space for rolling.
After rolling the pastry over the filling and sealing, the sausage rolls are baked at 400°F until the pastry is golden and crisp, and the filling is fully cooked. This method creates a flaky exterior contrasting with the savory, cheesy filling of spiced sausage and soft potatoes.
Sausage rolls are suitable as a warm snack or meal and pair well with condiments like ketchup, honey mustard, or salsa. Using a pizza cutter aids in quickly slicing the puff pastry for even rolls. Frozen shredded hash browns can substitute thawed diced potatoes, providing a convenient alternate ingredient.
Ingredients
- 2 puff pastry thawed, 17-ounce packages
- 1 pound ground pork sausage
- 1 pound potato thawed, frozen diced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded
- 1 egg + 1 tablespoon water, large
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Thaw your puff pastry according to package directions or unroll and thaw on the counter in your kitchen (keep some parchment lining on the pastry to keep it from drying out) for 30 minutes.
- While your puff pastry is thawing, cook the sauce and potatoes. In a large skillet over medium-high heat brown the sausage and potatoes for about 5 minutes using a spatula or wooden spoon to bread up the sausage into crumbles as it cooks. (Sausage does not need to be fully cooked at this point, it will continue cooking in the oven in step 8)
- Season with worcestershire, onion powder, and garlic powder, and give it a good stir over the heat for 1-2 minutes.
- Cut puff pastry sheets in half down the center. Spoon mixture to create mounds of the sausage and potatoes down one side length of the puff pastry dough keeping about 1 inch between scoops.
- Add some shredded cheddar cheese to the top of each sausage and potato mound.
- Fold puff pastry over the mounts and use a fork to crimp the long edge to seal the dough. Cut between each of the mounds. Place each sausage roll on your prepared baking sheet at last two inches apart.
- Whisk together egg and water. Brush over each sausage roll.
- Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes or until puff pastry is fully cooked and golden and the cheese is melty. Allow to cool slightly before serving warm.
Notes
- Use a pizza cutter to slice puff pastry quickly and cleanly.
- Serve sausage rolls warm; they are enjoyable plain or with ketchup, honey mustard, or salsa.
- Frozen shredded hash browns (thawed) can replace diced potatoes in the filling.
