Slow Cooker General Tso's Chicken
Description
This recipe starts by coating cubed chicken breast in cornstarch to create a slight crust and help thicken the sauce during cooking. Lightly browning the chicken in vegetable oil seals in juices and adds a slight savory note before transferring to the slow cooker. The sauce combines hoisin and soy sauce for a sweet-salty base, brown sugar for sweetness, garlic and ground ginger for warmth, rice wine vinegar for acidity, and a bit of sesame oil for depth. Crushed red pepper adds adjustable heat. Cooking on low heat for 3 to 4 hours allows flavors to meld and produces tender chicken coated in the thickened sauce. Garnishes of green onions, sesame seeds, or extra pepper flakes are suggested for added aroma and texture. This dish is suited to be served over steamed rice to balance its rich, bold flavors.
