Slow Cooker Hungarian Goulash

Slow Cooker Hungarian Goulash is a rich beef stew enhanced by Hungarian sweet and hot paprika, caraway seeds, and a tomato-beef broth base. Chunky beef pieces are browned before slow cooking with onions, garlic, bell peppers, and spices, resulting in tender meat and a fragrant, mildly spicy sauce. This dish offers a balanced depth of flavors and can be served with sour cream or extra caraway for traditional touches.

Description

The Slow Cooker Hungarian Goulash begins with cubed beef chuck roast seasoned liberally with sweet and hot Hungarian paprika, onion and garlic powder, and salt. After browning the beef to develop flavor, onions, garlic, and flour are cooked briefly to create a base before combining in the slow cooker with chopped bell peppers, beef broth, crushed tomato, caraway seeds, and bay leaf. Brown sugar is optional for a subtle sweetness.

Simmering on low for 8 hours or high for 4 to 6 allows the beef to become tender and the sauce to thicken with the flavors melding together. The caraway seeds add a distinctive bite associated with authentic Hungarian goulash, while the paprika defines its color and warmth without excessive heat.

Traditionally served with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of caraway seeds, this goulash complements wide egg noodles, bread, or potatoes. The savory and slightly sweet profile makes it a comforting meal for cooler weather or when a robust stew is desired.

Additional vegetables like carrots or potatoes can be included without losing authenticity. Leftover spice mixtures clinging to the beef during seasoning should be added to the slow cooker for full flavor integration.
