Stuffed Chicken Parmesan Burgers

Stuffed Chicken Parmesan Burgers feature ground chicken patties filled with melted mozzarella, seasoned with fresh herbs and spices, and cooked by pan, grill, or air fryer. Topped with marinara sauce and arugula, these burgers offer a moist, cheesy center with herb-infused meat. Carefully sealing the cheese inside ensures a gooey texture without leaking during cooking.

Description

Stuffed Chicken Parmesan Burgers are composed of ground chicken blended with an egg, shredded onion, fresh basil, garlic, oregano, salt, pepper, parmesan cheese, and panko breadcrumbs to form a flavorful, firm patty. Each patty encases a circular piece of mozzarella cheese, fully enclosed to prevent leakage when cooked. Cooking options include stovetop pan frying, grilling, or air frying, all aiming for an internal temperature of 165°F to ensure safety while keeping the interior juicy and the cheese melted.

Once cooked, patties are served on buns with warm marinara sauce and fresh arugula, inspired by chicken parmesan flavors but in burger form. The cheese provides a creamy contrast to the savory meat, while basil and oregano add herbal depth. Onion and garlic contribute aromatic notes, enhancing the overall profile. The use of parmesan and panko helps with binding and flavor.

Visual inspection by cutting a small notch in a burger ensures doneness and melted cheese, a helpful step since the cheese center makes temperature checks harder. Variations can include swapping ground chicken for turkey or experimenting with different stuffing cheeses.

For convenient serving, cooked burgers keep well refrigerated for up to three days, with buns and arugula stored separately. Freezing individually wrapped patties extends storage to three months. Reheating can be done in a microwave or oven, followed by assembly with buns and warm sauce.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb ground chicken 93% lean is best
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small yellow onion shredded on box grater
  • 2 tablespoon basil roughly chopped, fresh
  • 3 large garlic minced, cloves
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dried
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ cup Parmesan Cheese grated, fresh
  • ¼ cup panko breadcrumbs gluten-free or regular
  • 3 ounces mozzarella cut into 4 equal-sized circular pieces, whole milk
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • 1 ½ cups marinara sauce I love Rao’s
  • 1 cup arugula fresh
  • 1 large lemon
  • 4 Buns brioche, whole-wheat, regular, or gluten-free

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground chicken, egg, onion, garlic, basil, oregano, salt, pepper, parmesan, and panko breadcrumbs. Gently combine with hands.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4 portions. Flatten each portion, place a piece of mozzarella in the middle, and fold the chicken over, ensuring the cheese is completely covered. Patties should be about 1 inch thick with no cheese showing.
  3. Stove: Heat a large pan with 2 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat. Add burgers, cook for 5 minutes, flip, then reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for another 4-5 minutes until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
  4. Grill: If using an outdoor grill, preheat to medium (350-375°F), lightly grease the grill with oil, and cook burgers for 4-5 minutes on each side.
  5. Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F, add the stuffed burger patties to the basket (NO OVERLAPPING), and air fry for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  6. In a small saucepan, heat marinara sauce over medium-low on the stovetop. Or use the microwave in 30-second intervals until warm.
  7. Toss the arugula with a drizzle of olive oil, a squeeze of lemon, and a crack of salt & pepper.
  8. Serve burgers on toasted buns topped with arugula, marinara sauce, fresh basil, and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Form patties carefully to fully enclose the mozzarella and prevent cheese leakage during cooking.
  • Check doneness by cutting a small cut into a burger to ensure no pink remains and cheese is melted.
  • Ground chicken can be substituted with ground turkey, preferably 94% lean.
  • Try alternative cheeses like provolone, Swiss, or cheddar for stuffing.
  • Store cooked burgers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; keep buns and arugula separate.
  • Freeze individually wrapped patties for up to 3 months; reheat in microwave or oven before assembling.
