Teriyaki Beef
Description
Teriyaki Beef is prepared by marinating thinly sliced skirt steak in a mixture containing pineapple chunks with juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, and ginger. The pineapple juice tenderizes the beef, while the soy sauce and brown sugar create a well-rounded savory and sweet flavor profile. Grilling the steak quickly on medium-high heat results in a tender texture with caramelized edges. The reserved marinade, poured over the cooked beef, intensifies the overall taste and glaze. Serving this beef with rice or grilled pineapple complements its sweetness and enhances the meal's balance.
The marinade's components work together to provide both moisture and flavor, allowing the skirt steak to absorb the pineapple's natural sugars along with the robust notes from garlic and ginger. This combination stands out against the backdrop of the simple grilling technique, which ensures the steak remains juicy without overcooking. The inclusion of fresh pineapple is both a tenderizer and a flavorful ingredient contributing to the distinct character of this teriyaki version.
This Teriyaki Beef works well as a main entrée accompanied by plain or seasoned rice and vegetables, or as a component of skewer-style grilling when using sirloin cubes. The quick grilling time makes it suitable for casual occasions when you want a meat dish with a touch of sweetness and Asian-inspired flavors.
The notes mention alternatives such as using sirloin steak cut into chunks for skewers or using the marinade for burgers, indicating versatility. It is important to marinate the beef for at least six hours to ensure flavor penetration and tenderness.
Ingredients
- 15 ounces pineapple chunks with juice
- 1 cup soy sauce
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon ginger minced
- 1 pound skirt steak sliced very thin (carne asada works GREAT)
Instructions
- Mix together all ingredients, excluding beef. Set aside about 1/2 cup of the sauce, cover and refrigerate.
- Place beef in a Ziploc bag and pour marinade over. Press out all the air, seal, and marinate for at least 6 hours (overnight works great).
- Over prepared grill on medium-high heat, grill steak a minute or two on each side until cooked to your desired doneness. With the steak being so thin, you don't have to grill it for too long.
- Place beef in a large bowl, pour the reserved 1/2 cup of sauce over the cooked beef and stir until well covered.
- Serve with rice and/or grilled fresh pineapple.
Notes
- Sirloin steak can be substituted for skirt steak and cut into chunks for skewers.
- Marinate beef for at least 6 hours or overnight for best flavor and tenderness.
- The marinade works well for teriyaki burgers as an alternative use.
- Nutrition details exclude any rice served alongside.
