Thai Basil Beef
Description
The recipe starts by preparing vegetables: thin onion rings, long strips of red bell pepper, and diced carrots for color and texture. Ground beef is cooked with these vegetables to build a savory base. Meanwhile, a sauce of sweet chili sauce, lime juice, soy sauce, honey, and sriracha is mixed to combine sweet, sour, salty, and mildly spicy notes.
The sauce is poured over the meat and vegetables as they near completion, allowing the flavors to meld. At the finish, fresh julienned basil leaves are stirred in to impart a fragrant herbal element characteristic of this dish. Garnishes like red pepper flakes or green onion can be added for more heat or freshness.
This Thai Basil Beef pairs well with white rice to soak up the flavorful sauce and steamed broccoli for a balanced meal. It can also be served in lettuce wraps or over noodles. Preparing in large batches and storing in airtight containers allows for easy meal prep, with flavors holding well for up to 3-5 days refrigerated.
Ingredients
- 1 lbs ground beef 92-96% lean
- 1 tbsp garlic minced
- ½ red bell pepper
- 1 onion small, white
- ½ cup carrot diced
- 8-10 talks basil Holy Basil or Regular Italian Basil, fresh
For the sauce:
- ¼ cup sweet chili sauce
- 1 lime juice
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tsp sriracha
For serving:
- white rice
- broccoli steamed
Instructions
- Prep the vegetables first. Finely slice the onion into rings and the bell pepper into long strips. Use a vegetable chopper to dice the carrots (note: you can also use pre shredded carrots if you wish). Julianne the basil so it’s in thin, long pieces.
- Heat a skillet to medium heat. Add ground beef, onion, red pepper, and carrots to the skillet.
- While the beef cooks, make the Thai sauce. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together all of the ingredients: sweet chili sauce, juiced lime, soy sauce, honey and sriracha.
- Once the meat looks close to fully cooked, pour the sauce over the skillet. Fold together.
- Top the skillet with fresh basil and stir. Add desired amount of red pepper flakes and green onion for garnish.
- Serve over a bed of rice, in lettuce wraps, with steamed broccoli, or over udon noodles. Enjoy!
Notes
- This dish is well suited for meal prep; store individual portions with rice and broccoli in airtight containers for 3 to 5 days.
- Julienning basil finely helps distribute its flavor evenly through the dish.
