Turkey Sloppy Joes

Ground turkey simmered in a zesty homemade sloppy joe sauce.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound lean ground turkey
  • 1 onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • hamburger buns and coleslaw for serving

Sauce

  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard

Instructions

  1. Combine turkey, onion, and garlic in large skillet. Cook over medium heat until no pink remains. Drain if needed.
  2. Add green pepper and cook until tender, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add sauce ingredients, stir, and simmer uncovered until thickened, about 5-6 minutes.
  4. Spoon over hamburger buns and add coleslaw if desired.

Notes

  • *Nutrition information does not include bun or toppings
  • If the ground turkey has a lot of liquid, drain before adding sauce ingredients.
  • To save time, chop the bell pepper and measure sauce ingredients while the turkey is browning.
  • To cook in a slow cooker, brown the turkey per the recipe and add along with all sauce ingredients to a 4qt slow cooker. Cook on low 6-7 hours or high 3-4 hours.
  • Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days or freeze in freezer bags for up to four months.
