Whole Masoor Dal

Whole Masoor Dal is a hearty brown lentil curry cooked with turmeric, cumin, coriander, and chili powder, then thickened to preference. The dish is enhanced with a tempering of butter, garlic, cumin seeds, and chili powder for added aroma and flavor. Fresh coriander garnish brightens the final dish, making it comforting and richly spiced.

Description

Whole Masoor Dal features whole brown lentils simmered in water with salt, turmeric, chili, cumin, and coriander powders until tender. The cooking process yields a thick and hearty lentil curry. A tadka, or tempering, is prepared separately by melting butter and sautéing chopped garlic, cumin seeds, and chili powder to release their flavors.

This tadka is then added to the cooked lentils, infusing the dish with a fragrant, buttery, and mildly spicy depth. The dish is finished with finely chopped fresh coriander for a fresh herbal note. The dal can be served with rice or bread for a filling meal.
