Zesty Crockpot Chicken Alfredo
Description
This recipe places chicken breasts in a crockpot with chicken broth, butter, and Italian dressing mix, topped with cream cheese and cream of chicken soup. Cooking on high for several hours produces tender chicken that easily shreds and combines with the creamy sauce formed by the simmered dairy and seasoning. The Italian dressing mix contributes a distinct zesty and herbaceous flavor that permeates the dish.
The sauce is thick and creamy from the cream cheese and soup, balancing the savory chicken. It creates a comforting and slightly tangy Alfredo-style sauce without traditional heavy cream or Parmesan layers. The shredded chicken texture contrasts with the smooth sauce, making it suitable to ladle over cooked pasta or rice.
This dish serves well as a casual main course, offering convenience by using the crockpot method to simplify preparation and cook time. Adding vegetables such as peppers or broccoli can increase texture and nutritional value.
If the sauce is too thick after cooking, thinning with milk or heavy cream is suggested. It is recommended to avoid using frozen chicken due to safety concerns over slow heating. Homemade Italian dressing seasoning mix is an option if pre-made mix is unavailable.
Ingredients
- 3 chicken breast
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 package Italian dressing mix Good Seasons, zesty, dry
- 8 ounces cream cheese
- 1 can cream of chicken soup
- salt optional
- black pepper optional
Instructions
- Place chicken in the bottom of a Crock Pot.
- Add broth, butter, and dressing mix. Spoon cream cheese and chicken soup over the top. Sprinkle with salt and/or pepper to taste (optional).
- Cover and cook on high for 3 1/2 to 4 hours. Chicken should shred into small pieces. Add milk or heavy cream to thin the sauce if it’s too thick.
- Serve over pasta or rice.
Notes
- Homemade Italian dressing mix can substitute store-bought with a combination of seasonings like Montreal chicken seasoning, sugar, oregano, and lemon pepper.
- Do not over shred the chicken to avoid mushy texture in the sauce.
- Add vegetables such as peppers or broccoli to enhance flavor and nutrients.
- Use fresh chicken to ensure safe cooking; frozen chicken is not recommended due to slow heating risks.
- If the sauce is thick, thin it with milk or heavy cream to preferred consistency.
