2 Ingredient Slow Cooker Pulled Gammon (Shredded Ham)
Description
To prepare, place the gammon joint in a slow cooker and pour a can of pineapple chunks along with their juice over the top. Cook on high for 4 to 6 hours or on low for 6 to 8 hours, allowing the gammon to become tender throughout. The juice and pineapple soften and flavor the meat. The doneness is checked by confirming a skewer slides in easily or the meat shreds apart with forks without resistance.
Once cooked, the gammon is removed from the slow cooker, shredded into bite-sized pieces using two forks, and the pineapple and juice are discarded. This shredded ham is versatile for serving hot or cold, suitable for sandwiches, salads, or warm meal components.
A practical note: a 1 kilogram gammon cooked on high for 4 hours yielded tender results here. Serving it with fried fresh pineapple rings adds complementary sweetness and texture. The use of a lower salt gammon joint is recommended if available.
Ingredients
- 1– 1.5 kg gammon I used a 30% lower salt joint, boneless
- 435 g pineapple chunks in juice, canned
Instructions
- Place the gammon into the slow cooker.
- Pour the tin of pineapple chunks and juice over the top.
- Cook on high for 4 – 6 hours or low for 6 – 8 hours.
- Check the gammon is cooked by inserting a skewer into it, (it should glide ior test by pulling some meat away with a fork.
- Remove the gammon from the slow cooker (discarding the pineapple and juice and pull the meat apart with 2 forks until it’s all shredded.
- Serve hot or cold.
Notes
- A 1 kilogram gammon joint cooked on high for 4 hours turned out tender and shreddable, but cooking times may vary with joint size.
- Using a 30% lower salt gammon reduces saltiness without compromising flavor; this variety is worth seeking in stores.
- To serve with pineapple, fry fresh pineapple rings briefly in a griddle pan to caramelize them, providing contrast to the shredded ham.
