Easy Braised Short Ribs
Description
Easy Braised Short Ribs start by seasoning thick-cut English-style beef short ribs with kosher salt and coarse black pepper, then coating them lightly with flour. The floured ribs are seared in vegetable oil over high heat until a dark golden crust forms, which builds flavor and texture on the outside of the meat.
After browning the ribs, chopped yellow onions are added and caramelized briefly to develop sweetness. Then, BBQ sauce and beef broth are combined in the pot with the ribs partially submerged. The pot is covered and placed in a 325°F oven to braise for two to two and a half hours, allowing the ribs to become tender and the sauce to thicken.
This braised dish yields short ribs with a deep flavor and fall-off-the-bone tenderness. The BBQ sauce adds a tangy, slightly smoky component that complements the beef well. It can be served over mashed potatoes, polenta, or alongside hearty vegetables for a satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper coarse ground
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 yellow onion , chopped
- 3 pounds beef short ribs , thick cut (English Style)
- 2 cups BBQ sauce (recipe in link and above)
- 1 cup beef broth
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325 degrees, season your ribs with salt and pepper and toss with flour.
- In the Dutch oven on the stovetop, add the oil and heat to high, and brown the beef on all sides until dark brown, 4-5 minutes on each side.
- Lower the heat to medium, add the onions, and caramelize them to a nice deep golden brown color, about 3 minutes, then add the BBQ sauce, beef broth, and short ribs back into the pot leaving them exposed by about a 1/2 inch.
- Put the covered Dutch oven in your oven and cook for 2 to 2 1/2 hours, or until the meat is tender and can easily be pierced with a fork. The timing will depend on the size of each rib, if you have nice large cuts, stick closer to 2 1/2 hours.
