4-Ingredients Vegan Date Caramel Sauce
Description
The 4-Ingredients Vegan Date Caramel Sauce is made by boiling Medjool dates to soften, then blending them with coconut milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, and reserved date water until super smooth. This mixture is then gently simmered to thicken the sauce. The resulting caramel alternative is creamy with natural sweetness from dates and maple syrup, balanced by a hint of cinnamon. The process avoids refined sugars and uses plant-based ingredients, making it a distinct vegan option.
The texture is smooth and pourable, ideal for drizzling over desserts, oats, or using as a dip or spread. The coconut milk provides richness while the syrup enhances the sweetness without overwhelming the date flavor.
Adjusting the sauce by adding a pinch of sea salt or vanilla extract can create variations like salted caramel or vanilla caramel. Coconut oil or nut butters can also be incorporated to modify the texture and flavor, allowing some customization according to preference.
Ingredients
- 10 Medjool dates
- ½ cup coconut milk full-fat, from a can
- 4 tablespoons maple syrup
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
- 4 tablespoons date water reserved water from the dates
Instructions
- Fill a saucepan with water just enough to cover the dates. Gently boil dates for 10 minutes.
- Drain, reserving 4 tablespoons of the water. Let sit until cool to the touch. Peel and pit the dates. Chop the dates and toss them in a blender with the full-fat coconut milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, and reserved water. Blend until super smooth, about 2 or 3 minutes.
- Pour the sauce back into the saucepan and bring to a boil, then simmer for about 5 minutes, or until it thickens.
Notes
- Adding a pinch of sea salt improves the depth of flavor and can create a salted caramel variation.
- A few drops of natural vanilla or caramel extract can intensify the caramel taste.
- Replacing reserved water with melted coconut oil gives the sauce a silkier texture.
- Incorporate nut or seed butter such as tahini or almond butter for a richer, creamier sauce.
