7 Layer Bars

7 Layer Bars combine a buttery graham cracker crust with layers of semi-sweet chocolate chips, butterscotch morsels, toffee bits, pecans, and sweetened coconut flakes, all topped with condensed milk and baked until set. The texture is a delightful mix of crunchy and chewy, supported by the sweet and rich flavors from the layers of chips and nuts. Cooling fully before cutting ensures clean bars with a satisfying bite, making these bars suitable for sharing or casual snacking.

Description

The 7 Layer Bars recipe starts with melting salted butter in the baking pan to create a rich base. Crushed graham crackers mixed with the melted butter form a crisp, sturdy crust. This is topped sequentially with semi-sweet chocolate chips, butterscotch morsels, toffee bits, chopped pecans, and sweetened coconut flakes, adding layers of distinct texture and flavor. The final touch is drizzling sweetened condensed milk over all the ingredients, which, when baked, binds the layers into a pleasantly chewy and sweet treat.

Baking the bars at 350°F for about 18 to 22 minutes produces golden edges and a set top, signaling doneness. The combination of nuts and toffee provides crunch, while the melted chips and condensed milk give a creamy sweetness throughout. Once completely cooled, the bars hold together nicely when sliced into squares, making them convenient for serving or packing as snacks.

These bars are ideal for making ahead of time, as they store well for about a week at room temperature in an airtight container. Their layered complexity and mix of textures make them enjoyable for those who appreciate a variety of sweet elements in one dessert.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup butter salted
  • 14 whole graham crackers about 2 sleeves
  • 1 cup chocolate chips or milk chocolate, semi-sweet
  • 1 cup butterscotch morsels
  • 1/2 cup Toffee bits Heath brand
  • 1 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped
  • 1 cup sweetened coconut flakes
  • 1 (14 ounce can) sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. 1/2 cup salted butter in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Heat in the oven until the butter is melted and bubbly, about 3 to 5 minutes. Carefully remove from oven.
  3. 14 whole graham crackers in a zip-top bag and roll with a rolling pin, or pulse in a food processor until finely crushed, giving you 2 cups of graham cracker crumbs.
  4. Add the crumbs directly to the baking dish and mix with the melted butter until fully combined. Press firmly into an even crust using a spatula.
  5. Evenly sprinkle 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips over the crust, followed by 1 cup butterscotch morsels, 1/2 cup Heath toffee bits, 1 cup chopped pecansand 1 cup sweetened coconut flakes.
  6. Drizzle 1 (14 ounce can) sweetened condensed milk evenly over the top of the layered ingredients.
  7. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the top is set.
  8. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack, about 2 to 3 hours. Once cooled, cut into 24 bars.

Notes

  • Store the bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week to maintain freshness.
