After Swim Chlorine-Neutralizing Spray

The After Swim Chlorine-Neutralizing Spray is a simple mixture of filtered water, powdered sodium ascorbate, and optional essential oils combined in a spray bottle. It is designed to be applied after swimming to neutralize chlorine on skin and hair. Vitamin C in the sodium ascorbate works to counteract chlorine’s effects, and the essential oils provide optional fragrance.

Description

This spray uses 1/2 cup of filtered water mixed with 1/2 teaspoon of powdered sodium ascorbate, a form of vitamin C known for its ability to neutralize chlorine and chloramines. Addition of essential oils such as lavender, frankincense, peppermint, and a small amount of emulsifier like polysorbate 80 helps incorporate the oils into the water-based solution and add pleasant scent. The mixture is shaken thoroughly before use.

After swimming, the spray is applied liberally over the skin and hair, then rubbed in to ensure coverage. This helps reduce the smell and irritation caused by chlorine exposure. Following application, a normal shower routine should be followed.

Because the effectiveness may diminish over time, it is suggested to use the spray within one to two days of preparation for best results.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon sodium ascorbate powdered form
  • essential oils (optional - see below for more information)
  • A quality Glass Bottle or quality Plastic Bottle

Optional Essential Oils

  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 1 drop Peppermint
  • 6 drops polysorbate 80 this is one good choice for an emulsifier

Instructions

  1. Using a funnel, add water to a glass bottle or stable plastic spray bottle.
  2. Add the ascorbic acid.
  3. Add essential oils (if using).
  4. Put lid on bottle and shake to combine.
  5. After swimming, spray the solution all over, including on hair.
  6. Rub the vitamin c spray in, making sure to cover all of your skin.  If the Vitamin C doesn't cover your skin, it won't protect it.
  7. Shower as usual.
