Agua Con Chia y Limón Recipe

Agua Con Chia y Limón is a refreshing drink combining soaked chia seeds with lime juice, water, and sweetener. The chia seeds swell and form a gel-like texture when soaked, providing a unique mouthfeel. The combination balances tartness from lime with sweet syrup, making a hydrating beverage served cold with ice and lime slices.

Description

This recipe begins by soaking chia seeds in warm water for at least an hour so they absorb liquid and develop a jelly-like coating. This process helps prevent the seeds from clumping when mixed into the drink. The hydrated chia seeds are then combined with cold water, freshly squeezed lime juice from several large limes, and simple syrup or another sweetener adjusted to taste.

The final mixture is chilled and served over ice with lime slices for garnish. The drink offers a slight thickness from the chia seeds and a fresh citrus flavor accented by sweetness. This traditional agua fresca works well to refresh and hydrate.

If pressed for time, a shorter soak of 10 minutes is possible, but longer soaking improves the texture as the seeds fully swell. Stirring after adding water helps prevent lumps and distributes the seeds evenly throughout the drink.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 Tbsp chia seeds
  • 6 cups water 1.5 liters
  • 5 lime large
  • ½ cup simple syrup or ½ cup sugar or your favorite sweetener according to taste

Instructions

  1. In a medium jar (with tight-fitting lid), add the chia seeds and 1 cup warm water. Close the lid and shake the container for at least 15 seconds. Place it in the fridge for at least one hour.
  2. In a large pitcher, add the soaked chia seeds and just enough water to cover them. Mix the chia seeds with a fork to remove any lumps.
  3. Add the rest of the cold water and the lime juice. Then add the simple syrup and mix. Taste and adjust the sweetness if needed. Add more water if you would like it to be more diluted (though note that when you add ice, it will melt and naturally dilute the agua fresca).
  4. Serve with ice and sliced limes.

Notes

  • Soak chia seeds at least one hour for best gel formation and texture.
  • In a hurry, 10 minutes soaking is possible with thorough stirring.
  • Adjust sweetness to taste with simple syrup, sugar, or preferred sweetener.
  • Serve chilled with ice and sliced limes for freshness.
