Agua de Piña (Pineapple Cooler)

Agua de Piña is a refreshing pineapple cooler made by blending ripe pineapple cubes with water and sweetening the juice with light simple syrup. The juice is strained to remove pulp, resulting in a smooth, lightly sweetened beverage served over ice. Its bright, tropical flavor and natural sweetness make it a cooling drink for warm days or casual gatherings.

Description

Agua de Piña (Pineapple Cooler) highlights fresh pineapple as the primary ingredient, combined with a homemade light simple syrup made by dissolving granulated sugar in water. After blending the pineapple with water and removing the pulp through a sieve, the juice is mixed with additional water and sweetened to taste with simple syrup. This process produces a clear, subtly sweet juice that emphasizes the fruit's natural flavor without pulp or solids.

The drink balances the sweetness of the syrup with the fresh acidity and tropical notes of ripe pineapple, served chilled over ice to maximize refreshment. Its smooth texture and clean taste make it suitable as a light, non-alcoholic beverage for warm weather or as an accompaniment to meals.

Using ripe pineapple ensures maximum sweetness and flavor, but if unavailable, frozen pineapple can be substituted after thawing to avoid altering the texture toward a smoothie. Leftovers keep in the refrigerator for up to three days, maintaining the drink's freshness. This cooler can be enjoyed on its own or alongside other agua frescas for variety.

Ingredients

Servings
  • simple syrup 1 cup of granulated sugar and 2 cups of water, light
  • 2 pineapple cubed, ripe
  • 8 cups water

Instructions

Simple Syrup:

  1. Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium-heat just long enough for the sugar to melt. Remove from the heat and allow to cool down before using.

Agua de Piña:

  1. Place pineapple cubes into a blender and blend. Add 2 cups of water to get blender going. You will have to do this in two batches. Run through a sieve to remove pulp and discard. Put juice into a pitcher and add the remaining water.
  2. Add 1 cup of simple syrup or as much as you like depending on the sweetness of your pineapple and to your liking.
  3. Serve over ice.

Notes

  • Leftover pineapple cooler can be refrigerated and consumed within three days for best taste.
  • Frozen pineapple works as a substitute if fresh fruit is not available; thaw before blending to avoid a smoothie-like texture.
  • Adjust the amount of simple syrup according to the sweetness of your pineapple and personal preference.
