Air Fryer Baked Apples
Description
The Air Fryer Baked Apples recipe uses large apples—such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp—cut into wedges with seeds and cores removed. The wedges are coated in a mixture of maple syrup, cinnamon, and tapioca starch (or cornstarch), with optional melted butter to add richness. Placing a small amount of water beneath the air fryer basket helps create steam, ensuring the apples cook through evenly and maintain moisture.
Air frying at 380°F for 12–15 minutes softens the apples to a fork-tender texture, with stirring every few minutes for uniform cooking and coating. The combination of sweet syrup, warm cinnamon, and a thickened glaze enhances the natural apple flavors without overwhelming them.
This preparation can be served warm as a dessert or side. Removing peels is an option for those who prefer a smoother texture. Leftovers store well refrigerated for a day or two. Note that apple wedge size should be consistent to ensure even cooking, and consult your air fryer manufacturer about adding water below the basket, as not all models allow this safely.
Ingredients
- 4 large apple I like a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp
- 3 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon butter melted (optional, vegan; or margarine
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon tapioca starch or corn starch
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine the syrup, melted butter (if using), cinnamon and tapioca starch. Mix well.
- Wash your apples, remove any stickers and slice each apple into 8 wedges/segments, removing the seeds/core. Place the sliced apple wedges into the bowl and mix well to evenly coat.
- Place ¼ cup of water at the bottom of your air fryer, below the basket. Then place the coated apples inside the basket in an even layer. Air fry at 380 degrees F for 12-15 minutes, until the apples are fork-tender. Mix every 5 minutes or so. Serve warm.
Notes
- For a smoother texture, peel apples before slicing and coating.
- Cut apple wedges to uniform size to ensure even cooking.
- Choose your favorite apple variety or mix sweet and tart types.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 1–2 days.
- Verify with your air fryer manufacturer before adding water under the basket, as some models prohibit this.
