Air Fryer Baked Apples
Description
This recipe transforms whole apples by removing the core and filling the cavity with a blend of brown sugar, warming apple pie spice (or cinnamon), chopped pecans, and dried raisins for texture and sweetness. Small pieces of butter placed atop the filling melt during cooking, enriching the flavor and moisture.
Placing water in the air fryer basket creates steam, preventing the apples from drying out and ensuring even cooking. The apples cook at 350°F for about 15 minutes until tender but still holding shape. Varieties like Cortland, Granny Smith, Fuji, Fortune, and Honeycrisp work well for this method. Halving the apples is an option for quicker cooking.
Serving suggestions include topping with caramel sauce or a scoop of vanilla ice cream to complement the warm spices and nutty filling. The recipe can be adapted for vegan diets by substituting butter with coconut oil or soy-based alternatives, and also be baked in an oven if preferred.
Ingredients
- 2 apple large or medium
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoons apple pie spice or ground cinnamon
- 2 Tablespoon pecans chopped
- 2 Tablespoons raisin or dried cranberries
- 1 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup water for the air fryer basket
Instructions
- Wash and dry the apples. Core the apples by cutting around the stem with a knife. Then use a melon baller or spoon to remove the core and seeds, leaving the bottom of the apple intact.
- Mix the brown sugar, apple pie spice, pecans and raisins in a small bowl.
- Spoon the filling into the middle of the cored apples.
- Cut the butter into small pieces and put some inside the apples, on top of the filling.
- Put 1/2 cup water in the bottom of the air fryer, underneath the basket, so that the apples steam and stay moist as they cook.
- Place the filled apples in the air fryer basket and cook at 350 degrees F for 15 minutes.
Notes
- Use any baking apple such as Cortland, Granny Smith, Fuji, Fortune, or Honeycrisp for suitable texture and flavor.
- Cutting apples in half and removing the core allows for faster air frying with similar filling.
- For a vegan version, replace butter with coconut oil or soy-based butter alternatives.
- To bake in an oven, place apples in a pan with an inch of water and cook at 375°F for 35-45 minutes.
- Serve air-fried apples with caramel sauce or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for added richness.
