Air Fryer Biscuit Donut Recipe
Description
Using canned biscuit dough, this recipe shapes the dough into hearts with a hollow center to resemble donuts, then air fries them at 340°F until puffed and golden. The use of a smaller cookie cutter for the center hole creates the donut shape, and brushing with melted butter before air frying helps develop a golden crust. The air fryer method offers a quicker, less greasy alternative to traditional frying.
The resulting donuts offer a soft, tender crumb with a lightly crisp exterior. Once cooled slightly, they’re topped with strawberry or chocolate frosting thinned with milk for easy spreading and finished with sprinkles for added color and texture variations. The visual heart shape adds a playful touch to these easy homemade treats.
The donuts can also be baked in a conventional oven at 375°F if an air fryer is not available. Storage recommendations include keeping them airtight at room temperature or refrigerated for several days, with freezing advised for longer preservation, preferably without frosting to avoid sogginess on thawing.
Ingredients
- 1 can Biscuits 8 count, I used Annie's organic biscuits, use your favorite, refrigerated
- 2 tablespoons butter melted
- 1 can Strawberry Frosting or make your own
- 1 can chocolate frosting or make your own
- 2-4 tablespoons milk to thin the icing, whole
- Sprinkles change up for the occasion!
Instructions
- Begin this simple biscuit donut recipe by removing the biscuits from the can and laying them on a flat surface. Use a large heart cookie cutter to cut the biscuit into the shape of a heart. Depending on the cookie cutter you use, you may need to stretch the edges of the biscuit or use a rolling pin to make each biscuit a little larger. If you use a rolling pin, just a few gentle rolls should do the trick. You still want the biscuits to be thick
- Then, using a smaller heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out a hole in the center of each biscuit to make the donut holes. (you can air fry those too). Brush biscuit donut hearts with melted butter.
- Preheat air fryer to 340 degrees F. *Every air fryer heats a little differently, test out one or two and adjust the temp up or down by a few degrees, or bake less time or more time. . Spray the bottom of your air fryer basket with a little spray oil or line with parchment paper made for air fryers. Place your heart donuts into the basket about 2 inches apart to allow room for rising.Don't overcrowd, do in batches if needed. You can air fry the mini heart shaped donut holes too!
- Bake in preheated air fryer for about 6 minutes at 340 degrees f. Remember to flip them halfway through! You'll know the donuts are finished frying when they are golden brown and puffed. Set on a cooling rack and proceed with the rest of the donuts
Frosting Air Fryer Biscuit Donuts
- Allow donuts to cool on a wire rack or baking sheet. Make sure they are cooled, otherwise, the icing will melt off the hot donut. If desired, place rack in fridge to cool quicker. Next, grab two small microwave-safe bowls. Microwave a little (you won't use the whole can) strawberry and chocolate icing separately for 30-second intervals. Stir the icing until it's smooth and silky-soft.
- Then, add a little milk at a time to the frosting, stirring until it's still thick, but fluid. If you'd like a thinner icing, add more whole milk, one tablespoon at a time.
- Line a baking sheet or countertop with a sheet of parchment paper, and if desired, place a wire rack on top of sheet. Next, dip the tops into the icing and set them aside on the parchment paper. Transfer a little remaining icing into piping bags or a Ziplock bag. Cut a small hole in one corner and pipe the icing over the donuts in a straight-line design, as seen in the photos. Add sprinkles right away so they stick.
Notes
- Store donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
- Freeze leftovers in a tightly sealed container or freezer bag for up to 3 months; freeze unfrosted donuts to maintain texture.
- Oven baking alternative: bake prepared donuts on an ungreased baking sheet at 375°F for 10-15 minutes until golden and puffy.
- Adjust air fryer temperature slightly if needed, as different models vary; test with one or two donuts first.
